We’re so ready for spring to truly arrive that we’ve got beach houses on the brain. Nantucket beach house design, specifically. As natives of Massachusetts, the island of Nantucket, which lies about 30 miles south of Cape Cod, is the kind of place summer dreams are made of. We spent many a summer as children on The Cape, exploring the sandy (and sometimes slightly rocky) beaches, dipping our toes and legs into the often frigid salt water, and eating cone after cone of ice cream. Unlike the tonier homes and society of Long Island’s The Hamptons, Nantucket boasts a preppier, more family-oriented feel. The people that summer in Nantucket have been coming for decades, their homes have been passed down from generation to generation. There’s a sense of community in Nantucket that can’t be found in other summer retreats. Perhaps its this sense of community, and family, that contributes to Nantucket’s laid-back design style. Homes on the island, while classic and chic, have a worn in, comfortable feel that can’t be beat. The best beach houses are designed with LIFE in mind – not a magazine cover.
The home above is one we came across on Pinterest, and we had so much fun imagining what might live inside those doors. It’s the classic shingle style beach home, with a slightly weathered exterior and white accents. To match the light, airy, right on the tip of the shore feel of the exterior, we’ve selected pieces for the interior that stick to a light, natural color scheme. Nothing is too heavy in the space – just a lot of white, a little bit of wicker, and some light wood thrown in for good measure to warm up the space. Glass light pendants would look fabulous atop a kitchen island, while coral accent pieces bring a bit of the outside in.
