Whether your kitchen is large or small, breakfast nooks are the perfect way to make the most of extra space. Below, check out breakfast nook ideas, and see how to add a breakfast nook with storage (hint: benches!). If done right, breakfast nooks can add some serious storage and extra seating to boot. A bench or banquette can offer hidden storage underneath and functional seating on top.
Let’s Talk Breakfast Nooks
Breakfast nooks encompass all we love about kitchens and dining areas. Small and cozy, they provide the perfect place for Sunday mornings spent reading the New York Times and indulging in buttermilk pancakes. Breakfast nooks bring the family together over late night dinners and early morning bowls of cereal. Even better, breakfast nooks take advantage of otherwise awkward spaces. Corners that might not fit a large dining table but can accommodate a breakfast nook! Turn unused space into a seating area perfect for four or six people. Breakfast nooks are the perfect spot for bacon and eggs, but they’re also great for a girls night with wine and cheese, and they make a good spot for the “kids table” come holiday season.
Though breakfast nooks are both stylish and functional, we find that often, people have a bit of trouble coming up with breakfast nook design ideas. That’s why we’ve come up with this simple breakfast nook formula. All the best breakfast nooks include most, if not all, of the following: table, varied seating (we like a combination of bench and chairs), and a statement chandelier. Use those three pieces as your foundation, then add pillows, wall art, place settings and more to complete the space. We promise, if you start with a good table, a gorgeous chandelier, and varied seating, the rest is a piece of cake.
Dovey’s Gorgeous Breakfast Nook
The breakfast nook design featured in this post is one of our favorite non-traditional examples of a breakfast nook. It belongs to Christine Dovey, the blogger behind Bijou & Boheme, and is from her home tour, which was featured on Style Me Pretty Living a few months back. We’re kind of obsessed with Dovey’s home, and this space is no different. The modern Saarinen table paired with chic wishbone chairs (gold wishbone chairs, no less!) and stunning Murano glass chandeliers = perfection.
