Hi cuties! March is #WomensHistoryMonth and to kick it off I want to take a moment to spotlight the amazing young women at the Beacon Women in Business Club at Manhattan’s Beacon High School. I was recently invited to a Beacon Women in Business meeting to speak about my career path and participate in a Q&A.
Mentorship—especially with fellow female entrepreneurs—is a longtime passion of mine, so it was a true honor to be invited to spend an afternoon speaking with the members of the Beacon Women in Business Club. Past speakers include CMO for expanding companies and impressive names like Bobbie Lloyd, Julie Schott, and Barbara Corcoran so when I say I was beyond flattered, I mean it!
“What’s more is that these young women were so impressive and inspirational themselves! The event was beautifully planned and executed, and the questions posed to me were so thoughtful and relevant to the world we live in. Connecting with tomorrow’s business leaders like this really brought me such hope and joy.”
As I said, I want to shine a light on this fantastic organization so, read on for more information and some insights from one of the Club’s founding members, Anjali, who did an amazing job prepping me for my Q&A!
About the Beacon Women in Business Club
The Beacon Women in Business Club was founded in 2020 by two female students who felt overlooked and ignored by the all-male Stock Market Club. They started the Beacon Women in Business Club as space for their fellow female classmates (though all genders are welcome to participate) to feel empowered and have their ambition recognized.
“We know there is only so much we can teach with our limited personal experience and the best way for these girls, and us, to expand our understanding of business is through hearing from professional and accomplished business women… We look for women who have experience in entrepreneurship and have interest in inspiring the next generation of successful girls,” says Anjali, a senior Club leader in charge of in charge of outreach and event coordination and founding member.
The Club now has about 25 members from all grades at Beacon, all united by a common interest in learning about the business world and about the roles that femininity and sexism play in it. They meet weekly to explore business concepts—including investing, entrepreneurship, the economy, and marketing—along with playing games and enjoying guest speakers.
“We love hearing guests explain their stories and how they got to where they are today as they might inspire our members to research a new field as they embark on the college application process. Kathy is an example of a person who didn’t follow a direct career path to her exact field of success, but took many detours on the way. She has also had to balance being a woman, mom, and entrepreneur which is super-inspiring to us all and shows the personal side of being a woman in business. We loved hearing about how Kathy’s kids inspire her and keep her authentic to her true self. Also, the anecdotes from her first jobs were super-funny and relatable.” —Anjali, Beacon Women in Business Senior Leader
